Pee-Wee's Playhouse is a children's television program which ran from 1986 to 1990 , created by and starring Paul Reubens as Pee-Wee Herman and based on a stage show, The Pee Wee Herman Show, that Reubens preformed with The Groundlings improv group in the early 1980s. The series (and original stage show) is a throwback to classic 1950s and 60s children's shows, which Reubens watched as a child, such as Howdy Doody . The show featured live actors, puppets, and animation. Some of the puppet characters on the series included,

Many of the characters would later go on to appear in the 2009 revival of the Pee-Wee Herman Show .
