"That's Nitwhite!" - Dr. Nitwhite's main catchphrase

Dr. Nitwhite is a pelican scientist. His name is often mispronounced as "Dr. Nitwit," much to his chagrin. In most of his featured segments, he presents his assistant Watson with a word which he thinks is the only one that has a certain letter pattern. When Watson responds using a different word that has the exact same letter pattern, Dr. Nitwhite types the new word on his computer and expresses despair.

Dr. Nitwhite also made a few minor appearances outside his segment. In "Farmer Ken's Puzzle," he tells Theo and Cleo that "hen" is the only three letter word with "en" in it. However, Theo proves him wrong by saying the word "pen," which makes him upset and sends him back to the lab. He later returns claiming that "hen" and "pen" are the only three letter words with "en" in them. Unfortunately, he is proven wrong again when the announcer says the word "end" which upsets him all over again.

In To the Ship! To the Ship!, he tells Theo that "lip" is the only word with the letters "ip" at the end. However, Lionel shows up with the book "Mississippi Skip and His Pirate Ship," forcing Dr. Nitwhite to acknowledge that "ship" and "trip" also end with the letters "ip" at the end. And as he goes back to the lab, Theo yells out "sip" which flusters him even further.

Trivia[]

  • Dr. Nitwhite is similar to Dr. Nobel Price from Sesame Street, who was performed by Sesame Street puppeteers Brian Muehl and Kevin Clash. Nitwhite "discovers" unique letter combinations that are not actually unique, while Dr. Price "invents" items that already exist.
  • His full name, Dr. Alexander Graham Nitwhite, is a reference to that of Scottish-born inventor Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, who is credited with patenting the first telephone.
